I’ve developed a very small – in fact tiny – betting habit.
I’ve always liked a flutter if we go to the races. I’ll also bet on the outcome of elections and a few random things such as who might be the next James Bond.
However after we visited Lambourn for a wedding anniversary night away and I saw the horses out exercising, I’ve developed a very specific betting habit – starting with a £10 stake.
I’m betting on one specific jockey – Hollie Doyle @HollieDoyle1
She won on August 29th on Le Don de Vie, trained by Hughie Morrison and owned by Ozzie Kheir. I picked this horse for two random reasons:
- My friend Ali has a dog called The Don (named for Don Reeve) and
- because Hollie is a woman jockey, still a rarity in 2020.
Hollie Doyle has broken her own British record for winners ridden in a year by a woman (116 in 2019) by securing her 117th victory of 2020 on filly State Occasion at Kempton on October 14th.
So every day I check the Racing Post and see where she’s racing – I’ve discovered that jockeys tend to race a few horses at the same meeting, I’m clearly just working all this stuff out.
If I like the sound of a horse, if it’s got the name of a friend or relative in it or a musical reference then I make a bet £1 each way. I’m probably having a bet a couple of times a week and having two winners so far today with Trushan and Dame Malliot – the first horse picked because our dog is called Truso, I am up to £55.41 in my prize winning pot.
It’s not going to pay the mortgage off with my new interest but neither will I lose the house.
